The Illusion of Control
As we start wrapping up the year and looking ahead to 2026, most of us are knee-deep in planning mode. We’re talking budgets, priorities, and forecasts. And yet, if you’re being honest, there’s probably a part of you that feels… stuck.
It’s easy to get caught up in what’s happening around us. Interest rates, political noise, and consolidation moves by big players like Compass and Anywhere dominate the headlines. Honestly, it’s a lot. At times, it can feel overwhelming.
Not having control over what’s happening, and not knowing what will happen tomorrow, can also create tension.
But here’s the unfortunate truth: we don’t actually control anything. Not the rates. Not the market. And not whichever merger or lawsuit is the talk du jour. But what we can control is where we focus our energy… and that is what will ultimately shape our results.
Building a plan that’s bound to change
A plan doesn’t grant control, but it does give us a place to start. You’ll build your 2026 roadmap, execute through Q1, and somewhere along the way, things will shift. They always do. The key isn’t to have a perfect plan. It’s to be nimble enough to adjust when the market inevitably zigs or zags.
But whatever you do, don’t skip the planning altogether. You do need something that defines your focus, aligns your priorities, and gets everyone rowing in the same direction.
You also need to give yourself permission to adapt — to pivot, to recalibrate, and to breathe. No one can strategize on a deadline, or from a state of panic.
Brokerage planning: What to focus on
The conversations I’ve been having with brokerages lately share a consistent theme: get lean and get smart.
Trim costs without losing your edge.
Invest in people who elevate the team, not just fill seats.
Use technology that drives efficiency without killing the agent or client experience.
Replace legacy tools with fresh, multi-functional platforms that deliver more value for the same cost.
And on the revenue side, the smartest brokerages are expanding their profit engines beyond the transaction: mortgage, title, insurance, home warranty, and even utility connection programs that serve the client and strengthen the bottom line.
We’re in an industry that rewards clarity and courage. So as you map out your 2026, remember… control is an illusion, but confidence is a choice.
Plan boldly. Stay flexible.
And most importantly, take a breath. You’ve got this.
